Research and the Study of Psychology

Psychology is the "systematic, scientific study of behaviors and mental process" (Plotnik, R). Different approaches to psychology can be taken, and researchers such as Pavlov or Freud have greatly contributed to this discipline by creating interesting theories. The major approaches to Psychology are the biological, cognitive, behavioral, and psychoanalytic approaches. Each of them studies psychology from a different perspective. The biological approach studies the structures and functions of the brain and observes how our nervous system interacts with the environment to influence various aspects of our lives like our personality, emotions or memory. Researchers studying in this area sometimes deal with people having autism and often work with computerized images of the brain. These researchers are also called psychobiologists. When they work with autistics individuals, they examine their brain in order to understand why these people are different and have difficulty to distinguish objects from human beings. Another concrete example of the biological approach in psychology would be the study of all the physical responses to stress such as an increase in the heart rate or having sweaty palms.
The cognitive approach is completely different than the precedent one. Indeed, this approach focuses on "how we process, store, and use information and how this information influences what we attend, perceive, learn, remember and feel" (Plotnik, R). In contrary to the biological approach, psychologists working with the cognitive approach try to discover why autistic people have difficulty in the development of language skills rather than to figurate how they are different on a biological level. Researchers study the cognitive process by using the cognitive neuroscience which is basically the observation of computerized images of the brain when the subject is performing mental tasks. Going back to the previous example about stress, students who ...
