A Mid Summer Nights Dream

            "A Midsummer Night's Dream" Essay

Can a character be dynamic because of the actions of another character? In William Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream", the character Lysander is a prime example of this question. Lysander had a strong love for Hermia, but a love potion was accidentally placed on his eyes causing him to fall in love with Helena. Lysander changed from loving Hermia to loving Helena and a form a strong disliking for Hermia.
Lysander's character begins as an affectionate and caring person towards his love, Hermia. The reader can see this his caring nature towards Hermia when she is upset that her father will not allow her to marry Lysander when Lysander says: "How now my love! Why is your cheek so pale? How chance the roses there do fade so fast?" (I, i, 131-132). Lysander is showing his concern about Hermia because he is worried as to why she looks sick. He does not like to see her sad and wants to know how to make her feel better. In addition, Lysander and Hermia plan to run away so that they can get married and Lysander says: "... may I marry thee, and to that place the sharp Athenian law cannot pursue us."(I, i, 161-163). Lysander would do anything it takes to have Hermia and himself married. His love is strong for her that he would break the law to be with her. Furthermore, when Lysander and Hermia leave each other before they plan to run away Hermia says: "My good Lysander! I swear to thee, by Cupid's strongest bow, by his best arrow with the gold head, ... tomorrow truly I will meet with thee."(I, I, 168-170 & 178). Hermia shows the reader that she can see that Lysander's love for her is the strongest of any love. Other characters can see the strong love that Lysander has. Lysander's love for Hermia seems unbreakable to the reader because he is so caring and affectionate.
