lack of communication catch22

In Catch-22, Joseph Heller created a world in which the characters were "unique" in their own ways; some of them were mediocre, but most of them you could say, were a bit more insane than they were normal. In addition to the insanity, communication had become a grave problem among them as the many situations arose from the plotline. It was ludicrous how the lack of expression between the characters was so evident. In numerous scenes from the book, a normal conversation between two or more characters would be completely mind-bending; the discussion would go no where at all, as several questions would be answered with a following question. In some circumstances, this lack of intelligence turned out to be lethal, as many men would suffer from it. This shortage would be seen several times through out the story. The first example comes straight from the book, a scene in which Yossarian is the bombardier in an airplane piloted by Kid Sampson. They are flying a mission to Bologna, and then something wrong happened to the intercom... "'What?', he called out over his shoulder. 'I still can't hear you', Yossarian repeated. 'You will have to talk louder', Kid Sampson said, 'I Still can't hear you'. 'I said I still can't hear you!',

Major Major Major Major was also another victim of this communication deficiency. He would get so bored with the job he had been given that he would start inventing games; sometimes he would censor out all words but 'the', 'a' and 'for'. Yossarian didn't get his original question answered, which was why did he have crab apples in his mouth, and Orr continued on with his business. He was a lonely, and tormented person as he was growing up with no friends. The nurse that worked in the hospital took his temperature everyday to see how he was progressing, and one day while taking his temperature realized that he was dead. 'Because they are better than horse chestnuts', 'When I couldn't get apples, I got horse chestnuts, they have a better shape, but the same size'. Yossarian was there, and because Snowden had several wounds, and could not converse with Yossarian, Yossarian wound up aiding the wrong injury. There was a hidden injury in his chest, and soon after realizing this, Snowden died in Yossarian's arms. He was now ridiculed even to the point where he did not even want to be talked to by a single person. Major Major Major Major was another person who signed the same name later on and another C. This is one of the cases where this senseless shortage of intelligence would turn out to be lethal.
