Theme analysis of A Rose for E
The story begins on a sad note with the members of the town attending her funeral. The narrator tells a morbid story of the strong willed Miss Emily who had cut herself off from her community. Few had ever seen Miss Emily but many told stories after her death. This story put a strong definition to what love can motivate us to do. 1) Emily's, "Vigorous iron-gray, like the hair of an active man," give us a description of her personality. She is enormously proud and stubborn. When the city authorities come to ask her to pay her taxes she replies, "I have no taxes in Jefferson." Her constant reiteration of this fact looms over the town of Jefferson and its new city authority showing her mulish side. As years pass she deteriorates from a once "slender figure" to having people in the town comment that, "she had grown fat."
5) A Rose for Emily is about a person who kept very much to herself, letting no one into her physical or psychological space. Throughout the story they follow her every move and comment on it. While she was alive she became a problem to the town. "4) The values of the story suggest that without any form of compassion or love from another, a person can be led to the extreme. mages show us that Miss Emily is in a weakened condition. When the town saw her and Homer together they said, "She will marry him," but as the bitter truth came forward they had hope for her and said, "She will persuade him yet. Emily gradually deteriorated until her death paralleling the body of Homer. The description of her appearance sounds like a witch costume you'd wear for Halloween 2) Homer represents Emily's object of affection, but it was this affection itself that he could never return, "Homer himself had remarked- he liked men,"Emily embodies a woman slowly dying. " The town was full of people settled in their beliefs and lifestyles yet they were engrossed with Emily's behavior. She goes through stages, each being more depressing than the last. In the beginning she will at least leave the house to run errands and go on trips of that nature, but in the end the only thing coming in and out of that back door is her nameless servant with a basket to the market. Emily poisoned Homer because she wanted the warm loving feeling that she bestowed upon him to be returned, but he could not give it to her. We can draw up a picture of an old round hag with nappy gray hair who hasn't seen sunlight in years.
