Alfred, Lord Tennyson
The Biography of Alfred, Lord Tennyson Reverend George Clayton Tennyson and Elizabeth Fytche Tennyson raised twelve children; the fourth child of the twelve was Alfred Tennyson, born on the sixth of August 1809. This was a poor family that lived in the village of Somersby, Lincolnshire. The poet's paternal grandfather, however, was a successful businessman. The reason for George Tennyson's dramatic lifestyle change is that his father went against an old tradition by making his younger son his heir, and forced George, his oldest son, into ministry (Everett). After being put into this situation, George becomes constantly paranoid about the family's income and a violent alcoholic. Striving to live through his troubled atmosphere, the young intelligent Alfred began writing poetry and plays at an early age. Some of his childhood idols were Percy Bysshe Shelley, Sir Walter Scott, and Lord Byron. His father's behavior may have had an effect on Alfred's poetry, because most of his work gives off despondent emotions. Following the release of that book Tennyson became very depressed due its reviews, he also was deeply sadden by the unfortunate death of Hallam in 1833, as a result, he did not publish anything for next ten years. He remained loyal to the country of England and mindful of its government, despite the flaws that he saw. The 1855 volume of poems, Maud and Other Poems, is well liked today because it dramatized eccentric feelings and its ability to keep a rhythm. Although he lived to be eighty-three years old, the last of his recorded work were three verse plays he wrote in his sixties. In 1842 his luck would start to change for the better. In June of that year he finally published In Memoriam, which he worked on for seventeen years, it is a long poem inspired by the death of his close friend Hallam. The three plays, Queen Mary, Harold, and Becket, were all Tennyson's attempt at trying to get the people of England to realized the greatness in their country. Unlike his previous books, this one sticks to a specific topic of the struggle of dealing with a selfness of beauty and the responsibility to be a productive citizen of the world. In 1830 Alfred published another book of poems called Poems, Chiefly Lyrical. In November of that year he was crowned to surpass the success of William Wordsworth, which he very well did. Appointed by Queen Victoria as Poet Laureate, he proudly served this position for forty-two years! "Tennyson's years of uncertainty and financial insecurity were over; he became the greatly esteemed poetic spokesman of his age"(The Gale Group). The most popular poem in this book is "Mariana", a gloomy description of a rural area's environment that is very much comparable to Somersby, Lincolnshire were he grew up. Written in 1847, the story has to do with the cause of women's rights and his understanding of a woman's intellect. 1850 may have been the best year of his life. In the thirteen years between his last play and his death on October 2, 1892, Tennyson was given many awards and showered with a considerable amount of respect.
