Heroween

             When a tragic event occurs it is a reminder that we as a society must reevaluate ourselves and the way we live. On the cover of The New Yorker October 29, 2001 Peter DeSe've illustrates in his own way how the attack on the World Trade Centers September 11, 2001 changed our lives in his piece titled "Local Heroes". Holidays will be different from now on due to the effects of this event. As of 2001 Halloween has a new meaning as deSe've depicts children walking from door to door in search of candy. The Children are unusually dressed as firemen and policemen.
             The picture has an overall warm feeling to it. There are ten children on the sidewalk in front of town homes as one would find in New York City. All of the kids are carrying either a bag or a plastic jack-o-lantern to fill with candy. The faces of only four of the children can actually be seen. The characters are cartoon like with enlarged heads and short squatty bodies. On the faces of the children that can be seen smiles appear to represent that life as we know it is not over. The children's costumes are extremely oversized meaning that there is plenty room for our youth to grow and prosper. DeSe've uses shades of red and orange to dominate the picture to give the viewer a warm feeling. Leaves falling from trees may represent our fallen brethren but as we all know after leaves fall they are always replenished in the next spring.
             On September 11, 2001 an attack on the world trade towers in New York City took the lives of many citizens as well as a number of rescue workers such as policemen and firemen. This event changed the demeanor of America, but made a much deeper impact in the city of New York. DeSe've is reminding us of the event, but at the same time giving hope that the future is bright.
