             "Turning him over one saw that he could not have suffered long; his face had an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come."
             No one was really sure what 20 year old Paul Bäumer was thinking, but I know that I would be thinking the same as this quote describes. Erich Maria Remarque's amazing war novel All Quiet on the Western Front truly describes the absolute horrors of war and it's devastating consequences. Taking place during World War 1 in Germany during the 1910's, the book shows death and destruction as the Germans fight the Russians and French; it also shows that no one is the same again. It shows how people bond in a time of crisis, and it shows that in time of war, you can lose a friend just as fast as you can gain one. Much is learned through the book's morals and hidden messages. You need teamwork and unity at such a time, or you will not make it. Many strong bonds are gained in war, but few make it to live out that bond. Many go insane because of the pure madness around them; it is no state to be in. Remarque does not write of any fictional love stories; only of the truth, and that truth is harsh. He shows the true perils of war, what really goes on in those trenches, and how people really react. There are no parades, no high-fives, no medals, no loud music in this book; only facts. War is one of the most terrible things to go through in life, and once you have, you're never the same.
             Again, Remarque uses nothing false or spiced up in the book. He tells only the bitter truth of the absolute horrors of war, and what happens within it. There is so much violence and destruction, and you truly realize it through the eyes of a young soldier in combat. There is destruction all around, reigning on people, animals and land alike. Many soldiers are killed in action, and many die off guard. Explosions spread all around and men get shredded...
