kids
I have to admit, when first told of our out of class assignment to work with the kids from Cambridge; I thought it was just something to do in my spare time. I figured I could spare enough time to get to know the kids while participating in outside activities. However, now with the "required" time we have to spend over at Cambridge almost finished, I find myself thinking that I would like to continue to work with and visit the children even after our time is up. As President Roosevelt said once, "Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing." I have seen these kids progress tremendously since the first day of my involvement, and I cannot help but feel that I had a little to do with it. I am willing to spend a little more of my spare time, if that means that at least one kid turns out to be a better person because of it. It also made me realize that more people need to realize that these people need our support and help. Some of the kids at Cambridge are still too young to understand the issue of homelessness and its effects on their family. Family stress increases and so can emotional and physical abuse. They have already spent much of their lives living in hard times. rced to settle for poor quality child care. risk more than others think is safe, love more than others think is wise, dream more than others think is practical, and expect more than others think is possible. Love is a state of being, not a state of mind. " Once one of these children realizes this statement, it will be all the inner-strength he or she needs to rise above his or her hardships and live a meaningful and productive life, whether it is a rich or poor one. Reality really kicked me in the head when I was hearing these stories. Some kids have already built up a defense system, complete with foul language, an indifferent attitude, and fighting skills way beyond the idea of playing. However, the path to that success is long and full of obstacles. I have learned to be more confident in myself and not to shy away from new situations or surroundings. This is the world these kids at Cambridge live with. "My work experience helped me to come to the conclusion that I would like to work with children as a chosen career.
