Sonnet 73

Sonnet 73 is divided into three quatrains and a couplet. Its rhyme scheme is ABAB CDCD EFEF GG. It is a love sonnet, which also covers ageing, dying and death. The sonnet is written in Iambic Pentameter. Caesura occurs in the 2nd, 4th, 8th and 13th line. These brief pauses in the sonnet contribute to the overall effect it has on the reader. Enjambment is on the 1st, 2nd and 5th line. In each the sentence is finished on the next line.

The first quatrain is about aging. The author used the metaphor of autumn to stand for his progression in years, just like the leaves change and fall from the trees, the author has changed and lost his youth.
The second quatrain is about dying. The author states a comparison of his aging to a sunset. Sunset represents dying. He also compares night to death.
The third quatrain is about death. The author speaks of his youth as being on a death bed of ashes. He is also suggesting the person is nearing th
