Commencement Speech
Welcome Mr. Cole, the board of trustees, faculty and staff, parents and family members, current Westminster students, and members of the Class of 2004.It's hard to believe looking back on the three or four years that we've been here, that we'd ever actually make it to this place. Now that I stand here, I just have to say, it feels great. And since it's a day when I'm supposed to say some words on behalf of my class, it's also a day that I've secretly dreaded ever since I was chosen. You think it's tough getting through AP exams and tests at this time of year? Consider for a moment finishing the final test of your high school career only to be faced with the prospect of writing something appropriate for a convocation ceremony. Give me another math exam any day. It's no easy task trying to put into words what so many of us are feeling tonight. Well, actually, I can say most of us are feeling a distinct sense of relief. AP exams and classes are finally over, or in my case preparing to deliver my speech is finally over. Personally, I feel genuine excitement over that. And with all due respect to Mr. Doucette, I feel even more excited over the prospect of never having to do a geometric equation - possibly ever again in my
Thus the long journey of tests, homework, and applications began. I realize that change on this scale does not happen overnight, but change does have to begin somewhere. We all have the wisdom that comes with years of schooling and experience. As we prepare to leave the yellow brick road that we have traveled for the past four years, remember that the ability to realize our goals ultimately lies within ourselves. However, as we prepare to step into the Emerald City we should remember what Dorothy taught us. In closing, our journey is just like Dorothy's journey in the Wizard of Oz. In front of us loomed the ambitious goal of success. I don't want to stand here and claim that the graduating class of Westminster is the future. And so, before I end this speech, I'd again like to congratulate all my fellow graduates. However, none of this would have been possible without the guidance and help from Glenda, the Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tin-man. It is only within ourselves that we can find the key to success. As is the case for every new student, I entered the school feeling incredibly nervous. She was confronted with many new, exciting, and unusual things upon her arrival.
