in a story "to set our house in order",Margaret Laurence delicately portrays a few characters in order to indicate the theme that not everything caan be controlled as accidents might easily happen. the character of grandermother macleod provides the main focus for this theme.she is a rigid, unpleasent woman, who has many troubles in her life.she believes that everything should be in order and tries to set her house in order. she also wants to be a lady.however real life destroys her dream. the great depression makes her unable to afford a housekeeper. the accident of her younger son almost kill her. she wants vannessa to become a lady like her.however, doesn't agree with her. as a result, grandermother macleod can't control her destiny. in addition, this theme is demonstrated through other characters-uncle roderick, granderfather macleod and ewen. uncle roderick loses one of his eyes because of ewen's mistake. then without proper sight,he is killed in the war.this t

Their experiences with lifehas made them able to see things in a different then the rest of us. Grandmother Maclaoddefinitely had nothing positive to contribute to her family and it wasn'thealthy the way she wanted everything to be kept from the past, focused ondeath. Even though she did have a hard life, with her favorite son ahusband dying, I did not feel the least bit sorry for her. She had nothing beneficial to pass on to Vanessa because she wasso bitter and was not able to cope with the ups and downs in her life. After completing this course my opinion of elderly people has changedthat they have many things to offer a family. these characters destinies are determined by accidents. Thefinal story To Set Our House in Order by Margaret Laurence was a storythat showed different kinds of relationships between a grandparent and afamily. It wasunfair of the grandmother to insist on the name of her dead son. Whilethe mother was in the hospital and Vanessa was upset and worried, she justended up making her worst, she tried to confront her but was not able to,she was so wrapped up with herself that she couldn't give her grandchildthe proper love and comfort she deserved at the time. The most important lesson I havelearned in these stories was that just because old people seem old on theoutside it doesn't mean that their just as worthless as their age, aselderly people have allot to offer the world still mentally, as they'velived life almost to the end while I've only started so alittle help froman experienced person in life can sure help allot. " GrandmotherMaclaod insisted, in a voice as persuasive as a death threat. thus through her growing up awareness, the author points out the theme. on the other hand , ewen's fate is changed by this tragedy when he decides to study medicine and give up his interest of being a sailor. "Even I wish you would call him Roderick. also, granderfather chooses to be a doctor only because his father is a doctor.
