Cubism and Fauvism

Cubism and Fauvism were one of the most influential modern arts of the 20th century. Cubism was developed by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso and French artist Georges Braque in Paris between 1907 and 1914. Picasso and Braque found examples and initial concepts of cubism in two art sources. The first source was in primitive art, such as African tribal masks, Iberian sculptures and Egyptian bas- relief’s. The next source was in the work of artist, Paul Cézanne, in particular his late still life’s and landscapes. Cézanne introduced new geometric forms as well as new spatial relations, which broke the traditional perspective of the renaissance era. In this new form of art, called cubism, objects were portrayed by geometric shapes, and were broken down into several parts, showing many different aspects at once. Later Cubist paintings were painted without realistic detail, effects of light or emotional content, producing a very abstract form, different from the typical paintings of that time. Cubist paintings tried to make the object appear 3 dimensional, whereas fauvist paintings emphasised the flat, two dimensional surfaces. Cubism was the beginning of the abstract and non-objective art style.

. . .
Synthetic cubism uses the opposite approach to analytical cubism as Artists began to use artificial or imaginative shapes which were made to look like objects. Henri Matisse, who was among the first to produce ‘modern art’ was an artist whose aim was to paint a picture which would give visual pleasure. In this period artists began experimenting with the basic forms of cubism. Artists who joined include: Juan Gris, Roger de la Fresnaye, Lyonel Feininger, Ferand Leger, and Jacques Lipchitz. By 1910 many more artists had joined the cubist movement and they all had there own personal styles and ideas. Usually cubist artists try to make the paintings appear three dimensional whereas Fauvism is most commonly used in the form of painting, where colour (usually bold and bright) is the crucial theme of the piece.

Art historians usually divide the period of cubism into three phases. Cubism has more of an abstract approach to it and is used to depict objects, landscapes, and people as multifaceted solids. Although fauvism was a relatively short movement, (4 years) it was influential and had a lasting impact on the art industry.

Analytical cubism, the next phase of cubism was developed between 1910 and 1912 and was a more complex and systematic form of cubism. During this phase the overlapping of objects was also introduced. It was in this phase that artists such as Picasso and Braque started to use pieces of cut up newspaper in their paintings and bright colours to produce a more abstract effect. Broken brush strokes, tone, shadow and distance were also introduced. Cubist artists use geometric shapes to represent what it is they want to paint, and generally the paintings are recognizable, but they are not meant to look realistic.
