The Narrator In Rebecca
In Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca the main character and Frank's standoffish natures help to demonstrate their friendship, this also plays out into the overall elements of gothic literature. Even though their personalities are in turn very different, the main character being very juvenile and Frank being extremely mature. Frank acts in an exceedingly straightforward manner, what is says is all which he will say. Frank does not mean to close those around him off it is just his nature. The main character is a people-pleaser; she will make herself uncomfortable because she believes it is the right answer. The main character is soft-spoken, shy, and a little needy. In the beginning she sought the approval of those around her in hopes that they would like her better for it. She is easily intimidated, and afraid of those whom are beneath her in the social hierarchy. Terror is well represented in du Maurier's Rebecca. The main character is influenced by the intangible nature of Mrs. Danvers, the main character feels as though Mrs. Danvers's eyes are on every move; she often thinks that she sees her skirt swish as she turns around a corner. Rebecca also has this effect on the main character; in many instances she feels that
she is able to smell her scent and her footsteps, "I fancy here right behind me. The narrator becomes grotesque when she is patted on the head by Maxim, she compares herself with Jasper. She also feels entrapped by the rhododendrons in her dreams as well as at Manderley. the narrator has many dream like visions. Du Maurier does not ignore architecture of the mind in the character the main character; she represents and is afflicted by many aspects. Danvers in the beginning, "Don't be a little idiot. Danvers is behind her with an odd look on her face. The narrator proves to be an unreliable narrator often because she taints things with what she is afraid that people will think. unlike any rhododendron plant I had seen before," (du Maurier 65) but in her dream it is Rebecca engulfing Maxim. The narrator fells she is entrapped when Maxim leaves for London the first time, "When I saw the car disappear around the sweep of the drive I felt exactly as though it would be our final parting and I should never see him again.
