Scientific Management is still

Scientific Management can be described as " an approach within classical management theory that emphasizes the scientific study of work methods inorder to improve worker efficiency" (Bartol & Martin,1998 pg 41). There are some core tenets that differentiate scientific management from other schools of management thought that preceded it. The most important concept is the four principles of management as laid down by F.W Taylor. They are (1) Scientifically study each part of a task and develop the best method for performing the task. (2) Carefully select workers and train them perform the task by using scientifically developed method. (3) Cooperate fully with workers to ensure that they use the proper method. (4) Divide work and responsibility so that the management is responsible for planning and work methods using scientific principles and workers are responsible for executing the work accordingly (Bartol & Martin,1998). To fully answer the question whether " Scientific management is still a vital tool for today's organizations" it is important to analyze two organizations that have adopted management practices inspired by scientific management. First case study is McDonalds restaurant chain and the other is the Melchester Ci

This was reflected by the Council's ability to secure public and private funding and develop several high profile, flagship projects. This extreme standardization has been possible due to the consistency achieved by Scientific Management . These are these are "efficiency, calculability, predictability and control" (Ritzer 2000, p. This use of Scientific Management has defined the key components of the McDonalds success story, high volume and short wait time for the product, consistency or predictability of the end product . The so called "McDonalization" has the following features that are evolution of the core principles of scientific management. Secondly by examining the areas where strategic management deviated from scientific management and inference can be drawn about the opportunity cost of this divergence. The assembly line techniques has enabled McDonalds to serve food at high volumes very quickly. This is clearly consistent with Taylor's quest for the one best way. 40) defines efficiency as "choosing the optimum means to a given end. Every process, from the time a patty sits in the grill to the amount of time a crew member is expected to garnish a tray of hamburger buns is clearly set out and is standardized across every McDonalds around the globe Another concept of Scientific Management that is used extensively in McDonalds is the concept of dichotomy between concept and execution. Firstly it reinforces the understanding how the embedded aspects of scientific management in strategic management increase the effectiveness of the Council. This time and motion concept is alive and well, indeed thriving inside the neighborhood McDonalds.
