             Physical Environment In Part II of Great Expectations:letter to director
             . The physical environment of Great Expectations has an important significance on the story line it also reflects the characters in personality and circumstance. So it is imperative that whilst directing this movie you include all the aspects of the physical environment in order for the viewers to have a better understanding of the characters moods and feelings as well as the characters themselves. I am now going to provide you with some examples of this.
             Pip begins to realize that the dull Rochester is not able to accommodate his hunger for wisdom. At this point Pip sees that to become noble and well educated was what he wanted and a want to be in better circumstances made a need for better settings become apparent and a large part of the story.
             The theme of the book seems to run parallel with the settings in some aspects, such as the plain but wholesome life-style of Rochester and the attractive but shallow habitat of London. Here is an example of how Dickens uses place, and Pip's attitude towards it, as symbolism. In this case, London is the setting for Pip's great expectations, but immediately we find it rather ugly, unnatural, and suffocating, giving us an indication of how those great expectations may be "played out".
             As Pip enters London around mid-day what he sees is a little of a disappointment to him "...scared by the immensity of London, I think I might have had some faint doubts whether it was not really rather ugly and crooked...", not the gleaming metropolis he had wished for, and this becomes very clear as he enters little Briton where Jagger's office is located.
             Jaggers is another person that is well represented by his setting, his office in little Britain described by Pip as having a dismal atmosphere is much as he is, cold, clinical and precise. Jaggers office serves as a
