title 9

For the last 30 years women have struggled for their rights. Slowly through the past three decades women have gained rights through amendments and titles, but some rights have come to the expense of men. Titles such as Title IX, have stirred up controversy regarding women's rights and the effects that the men have burdened because of it. Title IX of the Education Amendments was created and passed in 1972. The title was sponsored by United States senator Birch Bayh and United States Representative Edith Green and later signed by President Richard Nixon. As described by Shiller's Law Firm, Title IX was created as a statutory remedy for gender-biased classifications in education and applies to athletics in educational settings, whether intercollegiate or interscholastic. "Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 specifically provides that: No person in the united states shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal Title IX of the education Amendments of 1972 was initially established

Teams are being eliminated due to colleges and universities pouring their money into football and basketball. Presently 3 million or a 1 to 2 1/2 ratio of girls to boys participating. Hiding the other side by threatening a person's basic right to freedom of speech only causes more conflict and controversy over Title IX. And if men are sacrificed then will there be true equality? . ESPN's Greg Garber shows the other side to the claims of women and there lack of interest in sports. His article reports that women don't involve themselves in sports if they feel they cannot contribute. Many of those meeting at Capitol Hill are not protesting Title IX but instead want revisions ensuring that the elimination of men's sports will not continue in order to meet a quota. More than 400 men's athletic teams, mostly swimming and wrestling, have been cut as a result of Title IX's substantial proportionality requirement. Indirectly it has also increased the number of women in the work force as well as those in more difficult fields of occupation. A crucial argument against Title IX is the demand for women's sports. Oraker's article, Out of the Pocket: Title IX's Other Side, reveals statistics showing a lack of care by women when it comes to sports. The increase in women participation has other considerable effects that implement Title IX. Anderson also compares this situation to actions taken by Nazi ruler, Hitler. During the time that such strides have been made in women's athletics, men's athletics programs have suffered greatly. Today, more than 160,000 women are now active in athletics.
