Gawain is a hero because he steps up to the challenge and protects Arthur and the knights of the round table. However Sir Gawain shows integrity by refusing to use the green girdle because he did not want to use what he believed was supernatural. The supernatural also exists in the green girdle that was give to Sir Gawain. There is many examples of the supernatural in the story. The conflict between a villain and a hero protecting his people or property gives it Medieval Romance style. When Sir Gawain chopped the Green Knight's head off, the Green Knight picks up his head and goes away with his head in his arm while it continues to talk. The hero in the plot iss Sir Gawain and the villain is obviously the evil Green Knight. Obviously the Green Knight is the villain in the story because he is the antagonist and he challenges the knights. This is obviously supernatural because it is impossible for anyone to stay alive without their head and the head could not continue to speak after being disconnected from the body. Chaucer's story also has the typical elements of villains and heroes that are featured in a Medieval Romance.
