Great Expectations

1 paragraph summary of each of the 3 stages in the story: Pip, a young orphan living with his sister and her husband, sits in a cemetery one evening looking at his parents' tombstones. Suddenly, an escaped convict springs up from behind a tombstone, grabs Pip and orders him to bring him food and a file for his leg irons. Pip obeys, but the convict is soon captured anyway. The convict protects Pip by claiming to have stolen the items himself. One day Pip is taken by his Uncle Pumblechook to play at Satis House the home of the wealthy dowager Miss Havisham who wears an old wedding dress everywhere she goes and keeps all the clocks in her house stopped at the same time. During his visit, he meets a beautiful young girl named Estella who treats him coldly. Nevertheless, he falls in love with her and dreams of becoming a wealthy gentleman so that he might be worthy of her. He even hopes that Miss Havisham intends to make him a gentleman and marry him to Estella, but his hopes are dashed when, after months of regular visits to Satis House, Miss Havisham tells him that she will help him become a common laborer in his family's business. One day a lawyer named Jaggers appears with strange new

Joe's quiet goodness makes him one of the few completely sympathetic characters in Great Expectations. Joe Gagery - Joe is very kind-hearted, and moral. It had romance, action, suspense, and a little humor. All together I think it was a pretty good story. Unfortunately the police were tipped off and Magwitch is caught and sentenced to death, but he feels that his punishment is a sign that God has forgiven him, so he dies in peace. Pip's kindness, however, makes a deep impression on him, and he subsequently devotes himself to making a fortune and using it to elevate Pip into a higher social class. Pip is put in jail for his debts, but the Joe comes to London and pays them off for him, they return to Kent. Throughout the story Pip is madly in love with Estella and is desperately trying to win her over, but she marries another man and refuses Pip. Miss Havisham - She is very mad, and vengeful. Soon Pip becomes a gentleman and familiar figure barges into Pip's room, the convict, Magwitch, stuns Pip by announcing that he is his secret benefactor, not miss Havisham. It had everything, so it could appeal to anyone. Throughout most of the novel, Biddy represents the opposite of Estella; she is plain, kind, moral, and of Pip's own social class. but luckily, Joe had been saving money had had enough to pay off all of Pip's debts and get him out of jail.
