At the surface, the American Revolution and the Vietnam War seem like two completely different wars. But as I looked closer, I noticed that there were many similarities between the two wars, mainly in how the losing nation was defeated.
            
             Both the British in the American Revolution and the Americans in the Vietnam War had to deal with similar difficulties. First of all, both countries were superpowers and had the best army for their time. They were not trained in the territory they were fighting in. Both wars were unpopular for the losing country at home. They also had to deal with Guerilla Warfare. But one of the most important factors contributing to their defeat was distance.
            
             America and Britain are some of the biggest superpowers the world has ever known. Each had the most high-tech and best trained armies of their time. They had a strong economy. They were one of the most feared countries during the time. Britain was undefeatable in their style of combat. They used a European style of fighting, or "linear warfare". The Americans had Apache helicopters and many new types of bombs and missiles. A big threat was that the Americans had nuclear weapons. Both countries were very powerful and were some of the most feared countries ever.
            
             Both countries were unfamiliar with the territory the fought in. They were not trained to battle in the conditions they were put in. The British were used to fighting in big, open fields using linear warfare. When they got to America, they fought in the woods and in long, windy Indian trails. The climate of the south was much more hot and humid then they were used to. They were also not used to the diseases that went along with the south. The Americans in the Vietnam War were used to battling in trench warfare. When they got to Vietnam, they were battling in the jungle.
