Little Women

             Little Women was set in England, around the 1850's. The March family lived in a suburb of the city, which much simulated the countryside.
             In the 1850's, Little Women describes society as up-market and aristocratic for the wealthy people. They enjoyed grand balls, joyous music and beautiful and expensive clothes. Money was everything, and if a family did not have any, then their social status would be low, and the well-off people would not mix with the lower class. The 'lower-class' families had to work extremely hard for a very low wage and often went without food and barely any clothes. Many people suffered from poverty and could not find a job or were frequently out of work.
             In the 19th Century, women were not seen as important as men. Women could not vote or obtain very many jobs. While the men went out and worked, the women were expected to clean, cook and sew, because they were seen as fragile and brittle. Girls would often leave school at an early age of 14 to help out at home or to get a job. This was particularly common in the lower class of society because many of the parents had no many and needed their children to help out with expenses.
             The March family were very traditional; singing carols and hymns around an off-key pian, lighting candles as a sign of Christianity at Christmas time, praying frequently and always thinking of others before themselves. They always believed that no matter how bad they got, someone was always worse. This is what kept the family's spirit alive.
             Although the March family was living in poverty, and the children's father had gone to war, they still kept in great spirits and always held their head up high with pride.
