The basis of out constitution or rather the foundation upon which our
country is built has from the beginning stressed the importance of
separation between the church and the state. On the contrary to this
notion, every courtroom in our country contains the words "With God On
Our Side" behind the judges' seat. Clearly we don't have a separation of
church and state when we ask the witness to swear on the bible to tell
the truth while on stand, however we do try to draw a dotted line through
religion and church. The 1920's have been given an entire chapter in our
textbooks because of the events, which occurred during this period. The
roaring twenties as often referred to was the time when businesses were
thriving. People going to movies, enjoying life, work and technology was
the way people lived. We had already passed the World War I. It was also
the time when American culture was shaping itself. It isn't unheard of
having more than one opinion in a big country such as us. People of
united states of America don't always hold either totally conservative or
liberal views on all the issues, rather as times change as noted in
"Religion and Politics In America" by Fowler etal. He called it the
"Secularization Thesis". Marx, Weber, and Freud stated that within every
generation people were becoming more and more secular and that religion
will eventually be wept way. Dayton, Tennessee if we may call them the
part of the conservative south in the 1920's would have opposed of such
thesis and would have prohibited the teaching of it. The Scopes Trial, a
major political as well as historical event was the trial, which roved
that although it is against religion to believe in the Darwin scientific
theories of evolution, it should still be legal and not against religion
