Cinema Paradiso

Film can be an extremely powerful medium, and can introduce themes and issues to a wide variety of audiences on many different levels. The director carefully constructs the way in which the film is seen on screen, in order to best display these themes and create and idea in the audiences mind as to what they should assume, know and think about. In the film Cinema Paradiso, director Giuseppe Tornatore uses a range of film techniques that perfectly establish his main ideas. More specifically, in the opening of Cinema Paradiso, Tornatore uses film techniques to introduce ideas that will be built on, referred to and foreshadowed throughout the entire film. The way in which the director sets up the frame of the film, plays a crucial part in the establishment of main ideas. In essence, it gives the audience a feeling for the action of the film - so that the audience feels as if they are part of the film. This is important as it makes it easier for the actors to connect with the audience on an emotional level. In Cinema Paradiso, there are many emotional events that create tension - this tension is critical, as it can be used to highlight key points of the plot or theme. Specifically in Cinema Paradiso, Tornatore uses frame p

Once again, framing is a great example, but also the actions of Salvatore. The audience can watch the film almost unaware of the influence that the effects are having on the mood and feel of the film. He is a wealthy and successful film maker. Through the use of effects we learn just how important Alfredo was to Salvatore - without actually seeing the relationship they have further on in the film. This is another major idea of Cinema Paradiso that is established fairly similar to the other main idea of Salvatore's success not bringing happiness. Salvatore has grown to become very disconnected from his family. Despite this however, Salvatore is empty, for he cannot lead a fulfilling life through the films that he makes or watches - no matter how passionate he is about them. During the opening of the film, we are introduced to Italy in two different time periods - forty years apart from each other. When Salvatore arrives home to his large Rome apartment, he is shown as insignificant when compared to the large architecture and elaborate furnishings. Tornatore tells us - through the opening dialog - that Salvatore has not been home to visit his family in thirty years. Just before this conversation takes place, we observe two bowls. Modern technology such as cars makes huge differences in the construction of the scenes. Salvatore is once again shown as being disconnected now not only from his apartment, but his girlfriend. Tornatore has used the techniques well and as a result, it makes it easier to understand and connect with the film and get the most out of it.
