Lieutenant Colonel George Washington Goethals saw the Panama Canal to its completion. From 1907 to 1914 he successfully oversaw the project that for almost 25 years had consumed millions of dollars and thousands of lives. He was called "the Genius of the Panama Canal." The first documented suggestion of a canal across Panama was made in 1524 to Charles Vs.
