Lyndon B Johnson

The American Dream can be most easily described as the desire to come to America, make a more than decent living out of a successful career, move to the suburbs, have a family with the perfect mate, have two or three kids, a golden retriever, and a beautiful home surrounded by a white picket fence. There is one problem with achieving this dream, however, and that is that once the dream is achieved, there is nothing else to do. In his speech to the graduating class of 1964 of the University of Michigan, Lyndon B. Johnson spoke of this dream, and expressed his beliefs on it. His belief was known as the Great Society, and the difference between them is that the Great Society, unlike the American Dream, is a changing challenge. It turns the American Dream into from soulless wealth to a meaningful progress on which a richer life of mind and spirit is founded upon. The Great society is open to anyone, of any creed, color, or race, unlike the American Dream, which was most often achieved by Caucasians. The goal is to achieve a society where the demands of morality and the needs of the spirit can be realized in the life of the nation, and where we can all the reach past our imaginations, and turn the exploits of our genius to the full enrichment of our life. We have not yet achieved that goal however, for education, the key to imagination, is still costly. There are many differences that separate us: ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and nationality. There is a moral decadence, poverty, disunity, and violence, all the opposing points of the vision of a Great Society. There is no way we will ever achieve a perfect world, but the American Dream should be the one Lyndon B. Johnson envisioned, a world of peace, equality and unity. A world where the imagination is within reaching distance, and where life is rich and enjoyable.
