An inspector calls
AN INSPECTOR CALLS FINAL COURSEWORK ESSAYWhich character was responsible for the death of Eva Smith / Daisy Renton / Mrs Birling? 'An Inspector Calls' is a mysterious play that was written in 1947 and is set in the fictional town of Brumley, in 1912 (prior to the start of the Great War). The playwright is John Boynton Priestly, who uses a variety of interesting, unexpected twists in order to captivate the reader. In this essay, I will answer the question, 'who is the most responsible character for the suicide of Eva Smith / Daisy Renton?' In order to do this, I will analyse each characters involvement, and examine the range of emotions they display throughout. The play is a mystifying and exhilarating mix of many themes, including greed, vanity and rejection, as well as love, sex and secrecy. I feel that the play conveys a deep message without being melodramatic. 'An Inspector Calls' tells of the bourgeoisie Birling family celebrating the engagement of their daughter Sheila to an aristocratic man, Gerald Croft. The catalyst to the play, Inspector Goole, arrives and completely alters the situation, by forcing all the characters to examine their own consciences, which leads to a dramatic ending. The play is structured
At the beginning, he acts reserved, 'not quite at ease. He did not impregnate Eva Smith intentionally, but was in the mood where, 'a chap easily turns nasty' and he was seeking sex. Birling's husband, who also seems to have no sense of community. ' and Titanic is, 'unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable. ' His burning desire for sex encouraged the affair to commence. This implies that even as grown adults, they bicker and squabble like infants. Arthur Birling's philosophy of 'a man has to mind his own business' is heavily contradicted by the end, and through sacking Eva Smith, he proved his lack of Christian ethics, introducing the first link to the chain of events that lead to her death. In conclusion after having analysed each character's responsibility, I believe that no single character is fully responsible for the death of Eva Smith / Daisy Renton, as they all had a direct impact on the girl's life however nobody intended for her to die. Sybil Birling was not concerned about the grandchild she had lost, but more for the money Eric stole from her husband to support its mother. The fact that he lies to the woman he is to spend the rest of his life with shows his lack of honesty and sincerity. Each of the other characters in the play sees Sybil Birling to be responsible at different levels for the suicide. Eric Birling, the alcoholic, rapes and impregnates Daisy, whilst his mother Sybil Birling, the downright snob she is, in an ironic position as head of the charity, casts 'Mrs Birling' away when she most needed help. During the play we find out that Birling had Eva Smith sacked for asking for a pay rise.
