The most popular method, unfortunately, is the use of “pop-up” advertising. For those of you reading who are not “in the know”, a pop-up ad is an advertisement that appears on the computer screen out of nowhere, mostly when the pop-up victim is surfing the internet, but sometimes they will appear when the victim is not surfing the internet at all. They appear on my computer when I’m not even there, but enough of my life story. Let’s get back to the issue at hand. Love them or hate them, pop-up ads are here to stay. The majority of today’s internet users are doing everything in their power to stop them, but somehow pop-up ads are still an ef . . .
”# I have always wondered why companies use pop-up ads at all. The Nitty Gritty Joe Internet User and Pop-Ups I am one of these consumers that wishes pop-up ads would disappear forever. Computer problems such as these make me yearn for a time when we didn’t even have computers or the internet available. Conclusion We are trying to put out this grease fire but we’re only giving them water when we need to give them baking soda. Some Companies Can’t Live with ‘em For once online businesses are taking a hint from their visitors and doing away with pop-up ads. To understand the reasoning behind this, one has to see the issues from a consumer’s viewpoint as well as a businessman’s viewpoint. Many more internet users need to be educated about how pop-up ads work, so that they will no longer be suckered in by internet advertisers. However, as more advertisements pop up in our web browsers, more pop-up blocking software is being developed for disgruntled consumers to download. # ivillage and AskJeeves also did away with their pop-ups in order not to drive to away visitors to their sites. Jankhe describes the actions of these companies perfectly: “It represents one of those rare moments in business history when companies have chosen to give consumers what they want. It is almost as if I can’t go anywhere on the web without encountering several pop-up ads. I used to type papers on a typewriter and receive mail in a mailbox. I suppose if I look at the issue at hand from a struggling businessman’s perspective, I can see why pop-up ads are defended. This pop-up blocking software is free most of the time, but there are consumers “whose hatred of pop-ups runs so deep they’re willing to pay good money to retaliate”#.
