Poverty in Las Vegas

             Las Vegas is famous for its casinos, gambling, elaborately decorated hotels, the strip, wealth of imagery, and known as the premiere entertainment destination in the world. Within all this abundance of wealth, poverty exists. After exploring demographics of poverty in Las Vegas from the year 1970 to 2000, the change in the level of poverty is evident between each year. Poverty has been escalating from 1970 to1990 and deteriorating from 1990 to 2000. When looking at the demographics of poverty in Las Vegas one can derive many significant facts: the years in which the greatest percent change in poverty exists, and the areas/regions in which poverty increases and decreases.
             Between the years 1970 to 1980, poverty is slowly on the rise in Las Vegas. In North Las Vegas, the most dramatic percent change in poverty takes place, a rise in 20 to 100 percent. In the downtown region a 2.0 to 9.9 percent change in poverty occurs. The increase in poverty along the strip is lower around 0 to 1.9 percent. In the suburbs, the Summerlin region, there is a decrease in poverty from -10 to -1.9. The following data indicates that poverty is mostly located and has the most severe affect on North Las Vegas.
             In 1980 to 1990 poverty in Las Vegas is gradually growing. North Las Vegas continues to raise 20 to 100 percent. The downtown region tremendously increases from the previous decade, a change of 20 to l00 percent. However, along the strip the poverty rate is essentially unchanged 0 to 1.9 percent. The Summerlin region has a negative change in poverty in 1970 to 1980, now it has a positive growth of 0 to 1.9 percent. Overall, between 1980 to 1990 poverty continues to escalate in Las Vegas.
             Between 1990 to 2000, there is an enormous decrease in the rapid growth of poverty in North Las Vegas. In some areas as large as -20 to -10.1 percent and in others a change of 2.0 to 9.9 percent. In the downtown region, a change of 2.0 to 9.9 percent occurs...
