the war in Iraq

             The war in Iraq still continues claiming more than 500 United States soldiers. Many Americans wonder why we attacked and what are we still doing there? Along with being philanthropic to the Iraqi people by giving them a democratic society our soldiers are gaining military experience. Do we need to send our soldiers to war or to die just to get the 'Warrior Ethos'? General Peter Schoomaker head of the United States Army said "it was no use having an army that did nothing but train." The truth is we need this real time training and all active military should take turns training in Iraq. It gives the United States Military more training and chances to experiment with new tactics and ideas. With no real fear in Iraq we are basically doing target practice with live targets. This idea of thinking is crude but true. We have no fear of anyone or thing in Iraq. We have lost more than 500 United States soldiers but statistically there would be more dieing in the United States from alcohol and car accidents. The real life training our troops are receiving is benefiting us more than we realize. The experience will put us above the standards of many militaries we are competing with in the world. The Vietnam War proved that a smaller well trained experienced army is much more powerful then a giant army with little or no experience. We as Americans should be grateful that our men and woman are sacrificing their lives for the advancement of technology and knowledge. General Peter Schoomaker is right on track when he said, "There's got to be a certain appetite for what the hell we exist for." This war with Iraq will not hurt the United States but prepare us for the future. The war is giving our military something that cannot be learned in a classroom, experience.
