Suicide
A. After going to a party and being date-raped, 18 year-old Wendy Sunderland became depressed. She told no one of her trauma that she was so ashamed of. While at home on one of her breaks from college, Wendy unloaded her story to a close friend. She OD'd on anxiety pills, took a kitchen knife to the bathroom and proceeded to cut her wrists. Her stepfather walked in the bathroom, found Wendy, and called for an ambulance. Her suicide attempt failed. At the hospital she told her family of her rape, and was later released after the doctors pronounced her "overwhelmed". She went back to school and seemed to be doing well, actively participating in school activities and sorority sponsorships, even started dating a guy from her school. It was a surprise when her mom came home from work one day, and saw her daughter's car in the garage, after Wendy said she wouldn't be able to come home that weekend. An even bigger shock was when she went into Wendy's room and found her laying one her bed, dead. She had shot herself. B. Suicide is not a negative choice but rather a positive one, both in theory and personally. C. Hopefully that will be more understandable by the end of the speech after I discuss the problems which
Most teenagers don't know where to turn, or simply don't want anyone to know they have these feelings. Problems of Death: Opposing Viewpoints by David L. And for every one woman who has a "successful" suicide, four men kill themselves, but females are found to make three to four times as many attempts as males. Suicide is not a negative choice but rather a positive one, both in theory and personally. This cannot be true especially if one feels they are only doing harm to the community by continuing life. It also has a huge impact on our life because of the high stress in today's world. To say that suicide is a crime against society and the community as a whole is outrageous. Claims that by taking one's own life, they are taking away duties and obligations that they have to the public. But really there is help everywhere which is important for today's youths to be made aware of such as a crisis hotline, parents, a doctor, or a school counselor. This should be the case because I feel that if it were to be a less uncomfortable and criticized concept, more people would seek help. It is important to understand that suicide is not the problem, but rather its the solution. The burden of carrying such a secret may have been too much for her, that taking her own life was the only solution. By not understanding and respecting one's decision to take their life, we are only regressing, making the same mistakes over.
