metamorphosis
In Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Gregor turned into a vermin because he was alienated from the rest of this family before and after his change. Gregor loved his family, even though they neglected him. Because he was different from others after the metamorphosis, his family shunned him and he felt more alienation. His father, mother, and sister never cared for him. Gregor was a good son. He took the role of the caretaker for the family. His family took advantage of him by allowing him to support them financially. Gregor sacrificed his happiness in exchange for gratitude that his family never gave. The setting showed Gregor's unhappiness. For example, "Gregor's eyes then turned to the window and the overcast weather--he could hear raindrops hitting against the metal window ledge--completely depressed him" (Kafka 3). The dark day showed Gregor's somber when he was at home. The cold weather symbolized the relationship between Gregor and his family. The first thing on Gregor's mind was his job. He reflected, "what a grueling job I've picked! Day in, day out--on the road. The upset of doing business is much worse than the actual business in the home office, and besides, I've got the torture of traveling, worrying about changing
For example, when Grete was picking up his food, she "picked it up immediately--not with her bare hands, of course, but with a rag-- and carried it out" (Kafka, 24). Gregor's mother was scared of her son. His loneliness was revealed when he didn't have any friends at work. Gregor's father lacked respect for him. His mother also participated in removing all of Gregor's closets and furniture from his room. The cleaning lady was a stranger, yet she was willing to interact with Gregor. This response was like a father scolding a young kid for not keeping a tidy room. A physical change would be the full metamorphosis. The cleaning procedures may be applied for handling poison, which is unnecessary for Gregor's situation. His mother suffered from asthma and spent every other day lying on the sofa gasping for breath. He was angry with Gregor for embarrassing him and he felt ashamed of his son. When Gregor finish eating, "his unsuspecting sister took a broom and swept up, not only his leavings, but even the goods which Gregor had left completely untouched--as if they were took no longer usable--and dump[ed] everything hastily into a pail, which she covered with a wooden lid" (Kafka, 25). The door was "slammed shut with the cane" showed that the father isolated Gregor from the rest of the world.
