How And Why Wre Aboriginal Children Removed From Their Families?From the earliest days of British occupation of Australia, the Government allowed the removal of Aboriginal children from their families. These children are known as the 'stolen generation.' They were raised in institutions, or fostered out to white families. Between 1910 and 1970 up to 100 000 Aboriginal children were taken forcibly or under duress from their families by welfare officers or police. The reasons for how and why these Aboriginal children were removed from their families will be discussed. The main motives behind the Government policy, reasons given by the government will be explored. How the children were taken and what happened to them will be explained.It is believed that the main motive behind the Federal and State Government policy for the removal of Aboriginal children from their families, was to 'assimilate' Aboriginal children into European society over one or two generations. The policy presumed that, over time, indigenous people would die out or become so mixed with the European population that they would become indistinguishable. From this we can see that there are many conflicting reasons for the removal of Aboriginal children from their families. In these institutions the children were taught domestic services, and sometimes expected to go into low-grade domestic or farming jobs. Some say that the real reason behind the removal of Aboriginal children was because of the racist white society, and the "White Australia" policy. Which brings up an extremely important point. (Aboriginal parents would have to prove they were fit guardians- it was much too often the judgment of the charging officer decided Aboriginal guardians were 'unfit'. (Children left with relatives while their parent were away seeking work, were considered to be abandoned). Just 'cause we're not walking around on crutches or with bandages or plasters on our legs and arms doesn't mean we're not hurting. ) The reason why Aboriginal children were removed from their families was because of the Government policy of the time, and the above reasons were used as excuses to remove the child from his or her parents. " They will never forget the trauma they went through, being removed from their families at such a young age, and placed so far away from them, many to never see their families again.
