Mahatma Gandhi

             The movie depicted the life of Mahatma Gandhi in detail. In general, the flow of the story is consistent with historical facts. The presentation is also in a form of a flashback to emphasize that the movie is about a man who is very noble and has done great deeds for his country. The statements flashed at the start of the movie (No man's life can be encompassed in one telling...) also intensified the emphasis. Technically speaking, the movie consistently highlighted a high quality film in audio, visual and other aspects worthy of its nine Academy Awards received in 1982 including Best Picture. Locations and settings were also perfectly selected which all showed not only India but as well as its cultures and flavors. The actors and actresses also gave their best especially the ones playing the lead roles. In addition, most scenes were impressively shot since manipulation, mobilization and coordination of thousands of people to portray horrifying scenes is not easy. Scenes like the Amritsar massacre perfectly displayed the true segments of the event. Music like Indian songs also accompanied the scenes to amplify its content. The transition and pace of the movie was just right to fully grasp Gandhi's life --- its great deeds, nobility, wisdom and love for India.
             "They can kill me, torture me...
             but they shall not get my obedience.
             ...Poverty is the worst form of violence."
             Gandhi said these lines during a meeting with his fellow Indians in South Africa. They were discussing about their stand on the unjust laws set upon them by the rulers of the empire. Racism was prominent during those times that led to such discriminating decrees. He said that they should not resort to violence since it is violence per se that causes their own sufferings as discriminated people of the Empire.
