Narrative

             Let me ask you a question before I begin. Can you think back for a second and recall what your childhood was like? So now that I've got you thinking a little, can you dig a little deeper and think about the people during this time in your life? Most likely you probably called to mind your family and perhaps your friends. Oh, and then maybe your teachers, your employers, your teammates, your neighbors, your enemies. Why yes, your enemies. We've all had them. Whether it was your brother, your mother, your awful 10th grade English teacher who refused to give you an A even after you bribed him. Maybe your enemy was that dog that chased you home everyday after school. It varies with the person. And who was my enemy you ask? I'm going to tell you a little story about my childhood enemy.
             We met in the 4th grade. He was a goofy looking kid. He had wavy red hair that stuck up every which way, green eyes that hid behind his coke-bottle glasses, bushy eyebrows and funny brown dots scattered all over his face. He had a long, stick-thin figure that made him unnecessarily gangly at times. He also has a laugh so unmistakable that you knew it was him from the moment he opened his mouth. The first time I saw him I remember turning to my older brother, pointing and declaring, "Look at that funny looking kid over there Brandon." But Brandon, being the perfect mama's boy he was, shook his head and told me, "Don't say things like that Jason. You're not supposed to judge a book by its cover." Now, Brandon was four years older than me and I always looked up to him so I took what he said to heart. My thoughts that day were pretty much as follows. "Don't judge a book by its cover? Ok simple enough. So maybe I'll go over there and meet this goofy looking kid, I mean this kid. He looks friendly enough."
