hip hop

I. Hip hop defined as the artistic response to oppression. A way of expression in dance, music, word/song. A culture that thrives on creativity and nostalgia. As a musical art form it is stores of inner-city life, often with a message, spoken over beats of music. The culture includes rap and any other venture spawned from the hip hop style and culture. When Hip-Hop is mentioned in the general media, visions of young black men getting arrested, selling drugs, breaking the law and women being depicted as sex objects come to mind. Although all that is being depicted right now, there is more to Hip-Hop than what the media chooses to put out. When the Hard Knock Life tour took place in 1999, the only time the tour was mentioned in mainstream media was when there was a violent incident or if a fight broke out. No one ever mentioned the fact that when the tour was sold out in Houston the crew decided to donate their earnings for the night to the people that suffered or were victims to the Columbine shootings. There is a good side to the Hip-Hop culture. One of the main reasons why a majority of people that view Hip-Hop think that it is all negative is because that is the light that is cast by mainstream media. The original elements

Generally they'll just tag their names but in almost any Hip-Hop video that takes place on the street, you will see at least one mural or some form of Graffiti. That's where the term Break Dancer comes from. In Clives' time, DJs only used one turntable and could only play one song at a time. Artists such Mos Def, Jay-Z, Nas, KRS One, and Common are very skilled at rhetoric. At times the government has attempted to outlaw Graffiti on city walls and buildings, but the truth of it is that it must depend on the cause it is done for and how it is done beautifies the city. People don't seem to understand what hip hop really is. The art of MCing wouldn't be complete if there weren't DJs to back them up with beats. In 1975, as a child, Theodore Livingston (Later to be known as Grand Wizard Theodore) would love to play his music loud and his mother would disagree with how loud he played his music. Hip-Hop was a genre of music that began on the streets of New York City in the early 1970's. In 1973, a young Jamaican immigrant by the name of Clive Campbell, who was a resident of the Livingston section of the Bronx, is one of the founding fathers of Hip-Hop. So when you see a hip hop video or hear about an event, try to think of the good sides of the Hip-Hop culture instead of what the media tries to portray it as. didn't just start with people saying lets rap over a beat. Rap is something that you do, Hip-Hop is something that you live. As always in any situation, it's natural to want to take your art to the next level.
