It has been said that tragedy is not depressing because the audience sees a
             noble conception of human character. Argue for or against this view.
             Tragedy as a theatrical art form is merely a play that has a bad ending, usually
             catastrophic. The drama is portraying a conflict between the protagonist and destiny or circumstances. But it is every play that sets its own content and meaning. As we all know a man is better tested in his bad time. The true character is revealed when extreme happiness or sadness occur. Depressing is too harsh, when watching or reading the play we can feel sympathy and fear form coming events. But since the hero is basically a good person who takes his fall in a noble and genteel manner we can be depressed.
             There are many proverbs and sayings about humans in bad situations. The best one is "A friend in need is a friend in deed". It tells us that the true character of a friend is revealed at bad time when you need them. Some people are different at these time. Some are better some are worse. But this is the true test, in these situations the basic, even animalistic, characteristic of ones character are shown. When Oedipus talked to the old herdsman, trying to understand what happened to the baby. He was very impatience with him, urging him to speak.              Basically Oedipus is good. He was introduced like that in the prologue. He was described as a good king to his people. Along the story, when stress starts, we reveal some of his characteristic. In the end of the play after he faced his destiny we discover a noble character in Oedipus. A man who condemns him self to exile and blindness for his sins. No matter if he can escape them nor if he deserves them.
