The Progressive Era
The author E.L. Doctorow addresses many major societal changes in turn-of-the-century America in his novel Ragtime. Ragtime reflects the effects of business expansion and the progressive reform in the United States. Ragtime tells the reader a lot about the climate of the American society at the turn of the twentieth century. The novel displays how some characters welcome and accept change, while other reject and struggle with it. The progressives struggled to improve American society by working toward equality. Progressives shared optimism about American citizens' ability to improve social conditions, by actively intervening, both politically and morally, and ensure social justice. On the other hand, the upper, wealthy class struggled to maintain the current and traditional societal rules. They did not want to lose any of their wealth and power to the working, immigrant class. Throughout Ragtime, the characters attempt to derive meaning from their experiences and from the way in which the world challenges and changes them. J.P. Men were superior compared to women because they were mostly known for their ability to provide economically and during the late 1800s, women were tried of feeling inferior to men and they stood up for their rights. During the Progressive Era, the only way to sustain citizens tranquility was by providing them with more equality and justice, then only was social control attainable. Prohibition exhibited many of the characteristics of most progressive reforms. Anthony drafted a defining document of the women's movement, which was written in language parallel to the Declaration of Independence. Gangs of hoodlums became more powerful as they trafficked in alcohol. However, he does not gain any sense of satisfaction from his feats, because in private, his obsession with his mother, which continues even after her death, prevents him from emotional freedom. In many factories and mines employees worked long hours for low wages while operating unsafe machinery. The beginning of the movement in 1848 was marked by the Seneca Falls Convention, where its most prominent leaders Elizabeth Stanton and Susan B. I would classify the Progressive Era as a period about American citizens struggling to obtain rights equal to white men, while the entire Nation also was trying to embark upon reasonable working standards and conditions. Temperance advocates did not always emphasize prohibiting the consumption of alcohol. Soon, such terms as "bootlegger", "bath tub gin", and "speakeasy" became household words. The quest for women's suffrage was a struggle, which plagued America for seventy-two years, for the simple and inalienable right of representation and equality. During the Reconstruction, blacks were first freed from slavery, ability to be considered American citizens, and finally granted the right to vote. Directly after the publishing of The Jungle, the Pure Food and Drug Act established the Food and Drug Administration, which tested and approved drugs before they went on the market for consumers. Enforcement of prohibition became very difficult.
