"What are hospitality and tourism?" This is the question that people always ask me after I tell them my major. As high-end technologies develop rapidly in recent years, it is impossible to avoid the effect from globalization. National and global tourism become an essential industry, which generate million dollars of income every year, capable to influence the economy. I have chosen two articles for this analysis and both articles explain how local businesses response to the fluctuating number of tourism with political and economical factors involved. The first one is the academic article "San Diego Visitor Industry 2003 Forecast & Key Mediators" provided by San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau (www.sandiego.org); the next one is a periodic article "San Diego Tourism Enjoying Robust Rebound" by Michael Kinsman from San Diego Union Tribune newspaper, (San Diego: Sep 11, 2003). Although both articles are come from different sources and categories, according to the COLFV genre analysis format, both articles have some similarities and differences of content, organization, language, format, and audience values. The example from the article "San Diego tourism enjoying robust rebound" by Michael Kinsman, he used direct quotes from a profession "There is no place in the country that isn't envious of our tourism machine. Within days, tourism leaders were revising marketing plans," than something more complex from the academic one, "San Diego's visitor industry will follow the national trend with modest increases forecasted in overall visitors, hotel room nights and visitor spending. Moreover, there are a lot of verbalized sentences appear in this article since numerous direct quotes from people's speech have been used. Using reliable citations helps emphasis the points writers are trying to make. However, this particular piece of academic article was originally published on the Internet, in this case, it would contain simple and complex sentences which allow readers with different education standards to be understood. The language of the periodic article is very sample; vocabularies are easy to understand. 2 percent of hotel occupancy in San Diego while 68 percent nationwide in August. In comparison, the academic article is different from periodic article because it used the stander research and comparison method as its organization backbone. After that, the article provides facts, examples, statistics, and direct quotes from several tourism specialists' speeches to support that general information. Another difference between those two articles is the use of language. The values on the academic article provide trustable figures and numbers for individuals who want to do business on travel related industries such as maintaining accommodations, hosting convention, and generating attractions in San Diego. Periodic articles are designed for individuals with various education backgrounds; information has to keep as easy to understand as possible without overusing special terms. Comparing with the academic article, even though it has bold heading, it doesn't have picture and chart.
