Feminist Journalism in CA
While there is no one definition as to what it means to be a third wave feminist, generally it is agreed upon that feminism is meant to "combat the inequalities that woman face as a result of age, gender, race, sexual orientation, economic status or level of education." Using these terms, Michele Landsberg of the Toronto Star is in every sense of the word, a feminist. Over the past 25 years she has covered many of the issues that influence the lives of woman around the world and has been very outspoken in her writing against unjust politics and political institutions, racism, poverty, and violence towards woman. Michele Landsberg has definite ideas about the political system and its players, and has no qualms about sharing them. She is willing to question any political system or politician that she feels does not best suit the needs of the people whether it involves the President of the United States or child care in Ontario. In an article titled "Bush continues his right-wing war on woman," Mrs. Landsberg rightly points out that with President Bush in power, women around the world are once again in jeopardy of losing their reproductive rights. She even goes so far as to compare the Taliban to Mr. Bush, as both seem to hav
When Landsberg does question this practice, she is told that some woman in certain countries believe masks make them chaster and yet she assumes they are all slaves to their veils. One such woman is Madam Justice Baldwin, who recently called for a summit to be held in order to discuss the ongoing problem of violence against woman. " This statement does not seem exaggerated when you examine the facts. Racism, especially towards Muslim Canadians since the events of September 11th 2001, and issues of race, are problems that many in the media shy away from. Although poverty is a very concerning issue, the one issue that stands out most in Mrs. Her suggestion that the government should sell the abandoned housing to the homeless seems like a very reasonable one considering how little else is being done to help these people. In an article written shortly after the attacks of 9/11, Landsberg cautioned people against anti-Muslim attitudes, stating that it was hate that brought the attack, and that hate could only bring more suffering. Landsberg's recent work has been on youth poverty as she has tried to steer the public's attention from front line headers to the everyday suffering of uneducated and homeless youths. Her story entitled "Agency harasses disabled instead of helping them," focused on the lack of government aid available for disabled people and showed her disgust at a government who she says have designed the system "to penalize and harass the disabled. Landsberg even received the Governor-General's Award for her contribution to woman's quality of life. Landsberg brings women's struggles to the public's attention and also talks about the need for better laws to protect women in the future.
