At precisely 8:16 on August 6th 1945, 70 000 people instantly lost their lives. Three days later, on August 9th 1945, another 40 000 civilians were killed suddenly. Why? The United States of America dropped the first two fatal atomic bombs on the Japanese Empire. The first bomb carried the equivalent to 20 00 tons of TNT, the second 21 000 tons. Decades after the bombing occurred, people all around the world are still questioning the validation of President Truman’s decision to drop the bombs. It is said that the bomb was an immoral act of injustice; nevertheless there are still those who argue it was the only solution to ending World War 2. Was the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in reality, relevant to end the war?

Hiroshima. Why was it chosen? “This is an important army depot and port of embarkation in the middle of an urban industrial area. It is a good radar target and it is such a size that a large part of the city could be extensively damaged. There are adjacent hills, which are likely to produce a focussing effect, which would considerably increase the blast damage. Due to rivers it is not a good incendiary target. ” These words, spoken by Dr. O

People who are against the dropping of the A-bomb argue that Japan was going to surrender in the coming months, and that the dropping was unnecessary. With a population of approximately 173 000, 45 000 were killed immediately. ”

“It is entirely beyond my power to put the terrible sight into words. Five days after the bombing of Nagasaki, on August 14, 1945, Japan surrendered. ”

“I've seen the explosion of revisionist historians trying to spew their versions of why it would have been better to invade the Japanese home islands, killing many more on both sides with guns than what we did with two single bombs. 3 square kilometres was utterly levelled from the strong windblasts (305 km/h – five times stronger than the wind created by strong hurricanes), and rivers suffered immense contamination.

So how can we come to a conclusion? Compare the facts, compare the atrocities, compare the loss of human life. By dropping two bombs successively in a short time period, it would capitalize on their assumptions and lead them to believe that the United States of America had many of these same bombs that it was prepared to use until the Japanese were willing to surrender. It is still excruciatingly difficult to make a decision.

Of course, in any debate, there is another side to the story. It was in the Japanese culture, instigated into their society to never surrender.
