Lois Lowry
"... Now I deal with the frustrations, fears, and disappointments of life by making stories out of them: by examining them, tipping them upside down and inside out arranging them in an order that makes sense, weaving them through with details and holding them up to the light." That is how Lois Lowry comes up with her stories. By taking all her emotions and what everyone deals with in life and also by using some of her childhood memories in writing her stories. Lois Lowry was born on March 20, 1973 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her parents were Robert E. Hammersberg and Katherine Hammersberg, who was a teacher. Her father was a dentist who was stationed with the army at Pearl Harbor, but before the bombing, the family moved to the mainland in the Amish country of Pennsylvania. The house and town in Pennsylvania where she grew up is used as the setting for one of her books called, Autumn Street. Lois Lowry's intelligence was shown early at the age of three years-old, she learned how to read at the age of three years-old. Lowry attended Brown University through the years 1954 and 1956 but even though she was smart, she dropped out of college early because of the tradition of the fifties to marry ea
Like A Summer to Die most all Lois Lowry's books have some type of connection from when she was a child. The Giver came from her father who was in a nursing home who was in a nursing home who lost most of his long-term memory. There is a satisfying sense of continuity, for me, in the realization that my own experiences, fictionalized, touch young readers in subtle and very personal ways. Connections"When I write, I draw a great deal from my own past. Number the Stars and The Giver both won a Newberry Medal and A Summer To Die won a Children's Literature Award. Writing"Although my books deal largely with families, I also attach a great deal of importance to friendships. As well as Lowry being a talented writer, she is also a freelance photographer. Also the Anastasia Krupnik series is based on the author's experiences growing up as well as the book Autumn Street. The book, however, is not totally based on fact but Lois' own sister, Helen, did die young of cancer and she used her own memories of that tragic time in the story. Lowry put together a book about him with photographs and a brief text for his very young daughter so that she could remember what her father was like. " Lois Lowry has made some connections on most of her stories. Number the Stars' character, Annemarie Johansen is based on Lois' real friend Annelise. Some of Lowry's works includes, A Summer to Die which Lowry says is her most personal book, Find A Stranger, Say Goodbye, the Anastasia Krupnik series, which some is based on her childhood and also her experiences as a parent, Rabble Starkey, Number the Stars and The Giver.
