damien the leper

Joseph was born into a religious family on January third, 1840 in Tremeloo, Belgium. He was the youngest of six siblings. Joseph, Auguste (his older brother) and Sister Pauline de Veuster would be read to by their mother about stories of the bible while there other siblings worked on the farm. Joseph had a normal childhood like any other kid; he had friends, a loving family and went to school. Belgium was divided into northerners and southerners. The northerners were Flemings who spoke in Flemish and the southerners were Walloons they spoke in French. Joseph went to a Walloon school which meant he had to learn French. His French was weak and the other students picked and harassed him. One day after school some of the boys at school tried to provoke Joseph, but they were no match for him for he was able to defend him self. At this time Auguste was serving his novitiate with the Pipus Fathers in Paris. Auguste had changed his name to Pamphile and told his brother of the all the joy he is having serving the Lord. Joseph envied his brother and with the encouragement of prayer and his wisdom he had decided to become a priest. His parents, mainly his father, to this information to shock and went to their parish priest for guidance. T


They were accustomed to their own pagan rules and religion and did not want change. The local were not eager at first to accept Damien's religion. This was chance to see new exotic land which he had dreamt about for years. Damien was amassed at the site of Hawaii. There was news from Hawaii demanding that they bring more missionaries. This island was a location for those with the lepers' disease to live so they could not spread their disease to those who are not infected. He is loved by his fellow brothers, enjoys the environment, and fines true happiness in his new life. At the end-Damien gets leperacy after 12 years of staying on the island. After Damien had settled into his new home he was assigned to build a church in the Kohala territory. He asks his superior for extra help, and they send him Joseph Dutton. He buried the dead, rapped bandages for the leper patients whose sores were opened and exposed, and he helped erect a hospital for the lepers. Knowing this information and advancing in non-jealous way, Damien addressed to the Superior General of Paris a fervent plea to be allowed to take his brother's place. Damien wanted to go but was rejected because he was in minor Orders.
