The Definition of Hero
The smoke from the fire fills the first floor of the house. Within minutes the second floor of the house is filled with smoke and a weary and discombobulated family is awoken from their sleep by the sounds of smoke alarms blaring out their warnings of disaster. "Grab the children and get outside, now," the father screams to his wife as he fumbles for the phone. Just as the wife makes it out into the yard with the children, the bottom floor burst into flames, preventing any escape for the father. A panic stricken wife waits desperately for the fire department to arrive, as she repeatedly yells out her husband's name, hoping for any type of response or sign of life from inside the house. Just as she is about to give up hope, the flashing lights and sirens of a fire truck begin to approach. Within only a couple of minutes firemen are set up on the scene, battling the fire with a barrage of water. Inside, the father lies on the floor of his bedroom, passed out from smoke inhalation. Knowing that the father only has a few precious moments left to live, a fireman bravely charges into the house with his partner running after him. Because Odysseus had the ability to overcome all of the dangerous and near-impossible situations he was put through, he became a hero of ancient literature. Heroes have existed since the beginning of time and will exist for thousands of more years to come. Odysseus' intelligence helps him and his friends escape from many dangerous situations. As the whole house goes up in flames behind him, the fireman gently places the man onto the soft grass of the lawn and begins performing CPR. After the group of vehicles that Jessica Lynch was traveling with took a wrong turn, they were attacked and overwhelmed by Iraqi soldiers.
