Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disorder that causes a gradual decline in memory, language skills, and perception of time and space. Today it is recognized as the most common cause of the loss of mental functions of people 65 and older. There has been lots of research done to find out the causes of the decline of memory, and what research has found is that Alzheimer's results from many factors, both genetic and environmental. Alzheimer's disease was discovered by Alois Alzheimer in 1906. His patient was 51 years old who showed problems with memory and disorientation. Her condition continued to get worse, and she died at the age of 55, which is much younger than Alzheimer's patients today. The autopsy "revealed that her brain had cortical atrophy and abnormalities in the cerebral cortex called neruofibrillary tangles and neuritic plaques" (Gruetzner, 7). There has been much research done to find the cause, and the results of the research points to abnormally shaped proteins called tangles and plaques. Tangles are thought to be caused by a protein called tau, which is found predominantly on axons. When tau is altered, it produces tangles, which ar

This gave them the idea that aluminum might be a cause of Alzheimer's. In healthy brains tau provides structural support, but for some reason the support collapses in Alzheimer's patients. The theory's that researchers have come up with are the viral, immune system, and the aluminum theory. The person has problems sleeping, does things repetitively, and has problems getting up and moving around. They give their patients brain scans to eliminate other disorders. It is cut into two pieces because of two enzymes , one being beta-secretase, and the other gamma secretase. This told researchers that aluminum was not the cause of Alzheimer's at all. The Immune System theory is the most plausible out of the rest. High amounts of aluminum were found in the brains of Alzheimer's patients, but at the same time other patients revealed no aluminum. Other causes of Alzheimer's points to environmental factors. Diagnosis and treatment is difficult for doctors because at this point in time there is not one underlying cause, the disease involves multiple factors. As of now, it is seen as a contributor to the disease. In this stage the person may become violent because of the excessive environmental demands put onto him.
