Clothing, Wealth and the Sun of Gatsby's Life Clothing, whether one would like to admit it or not, is a necessity. However, no matter who is wearing it, clothing is a measure of the class that a person is contained in. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald takes place during is the 1920's, a period during which new freedoms were being explored within fashion. Traditional clothing was being replaced by new, flashy attire that showed the wealth of people, as it had done in the past, of more extravagant fabrics and colors. The scene in which Jay Gatsby lays out and shows Daisy his clothes at the end of Chapter Five is a symbol of this wealth. Wealth and the severe importance of it is shown through Fitzgerald's' diction, references to other themes relating to wealth throughout the book, and as an explanation to why Daisy cries when Gatsby shows her the clothes. Scott Fitzgerald has successfully made us think of clothing in a new light. However, it is uncanny to how similar clothing as a sign of wealth in the 1920's relates to today. Diction is also important several words later when Fitzgerald is describing the colors and prints of the fabrics. Clothing is extremely significant not only to The Great Gatsby but also to everyone else in the world. While driving into the city in the car with Nick and Jordan, Tom says that he has been investigating Gatsby. The fact that it has such an importance in the book makes perfect sense. Gatsby suddenly has an advantage over Tom and she does not know how to deal with that. Then the wealthy had a particular style of dress, and today there are designer labels. It is the fact that the change is too hard for her to deal with. The reason that Daisy breaks out in tears is not only because they are the most beautiful shirts she has ever seen, but also because it is at that moment that she realizes that Gatsby has material possessions that she does not have. The reason that Daisy stays with Tom in the end is because leaving Tom for Gatsby would be too strong a move for her weak character.
