Football Fans; Pour Judgement
Football has consumed are country. Many people would say that it is a game that people of ages can enjoy. It is a common stereotype of college students to tarnish these games by causing violence and using them as platforms to showcase drunken behavior. Although, I believe post-college age people can act as ridiculous. I plan to examine both age groups while they watch a very important football game (University of Michigan vs. Ohio State University). If people knew that they were being studied, they would act differently; College students would most likely act wilder, while the others would be more conservative. I started out tailgating in a golf course across the street from the Michigan stadium. I observed there for two hours before continuing on to an Irish pub downtown town Ann Arbor, where I stayed for the remainder of the game. Later in the night when I had planed on being done, I ran into an incident that I felt was also relevant to my research. If I just looked at one school's fan following, then I wouldn't have enough information. So I am evaluating the two age groups at two different schools. At the tailgate it was relatively calm for the first hour. This was for the most part because
I was able to spot 4 groups to observe. Just before half time there was a poor call against U of M and immediately the Michigan fans started shouting about the call and the Ohio state age students stood up and started a verbal confrontation. It seems that two men were in the men's room together and the approximately 21 year old Michigan fan had made a comment (supposedly "Ohio State sucks"). They were told that if they didn't sit down they would have to leave. At the beginning of the game everyone was excited about the game but no one was acting any different than one and other. First, there was the group of U of M college students, then the U of M fans over 25, and then the corresponding groups for Ohio State. The first comment was spoken was by an Ohio State college student, he shouted out to a group of U of M students "Go Blow", a common phrase used to parody the phrase "Go Blue". the majority of the fans had found their friends and were sitting closely and socializing with each other while consuming massive amounts of alcohol. When you put alcohol into any situation, especially when there is a pre-determined rivalry you can count on irresponsible behavior. But this time out of the 25 people at this tailgate, 1 of the 5 over college age students, shouted in a serious tone of voice back "Don't make me come over there and kick some Buckeye ass". On the other hand, if I would have observed a sober tailgate my conclusion may have been completely different. After viewing this day from an outside perspective, I have witnessed that it is not necessarily a specific age group being less responsible. Lastly, I was watching the 11 o'clock news and heard a story about a drunken student leaving the game and running into a car that was carrying a family. But, it is not until the end of the entire game that my attention is completely drawn to a hall way near the bathroom. During the game became a little more interesting.
