There are two ways to get to Roosevelt Dam from Phoenix. You can take the highway or you can take Fish Creek Rd. I took the highway there. Going down the road in a 2003 Cadillac DeVille, the air-conditioning blasting trying to fight off the 118-degree heat. The road is flat and dusty with desert on both sides. I did not see any tumbleweed, just the occasional dead armadillo. It took about 45 minutes to get to Roosevelt Dam. It just appeared out of the desert as I crested a hill. It looked out of place, a sea of blue surrounded by browns, reds, oranges, and yellows. The dam was nice, but as it turns out it was only the opening act for what was to come.
             As I left the dam (I should mention that my father was with me), I decided to go home via Fish Creek Rd. It was the shorter route and we had dinner plans that day. Up Fish Creek Rd I drove. Up and up and up. Now it is important to mention that the road is only about 1½ lanes wide. It is slightly wider at the curves. Also, it is important to note that Roosevelt Lake (created by Roosevelt Dam) is a popular boating spot. As I got to the top of the road, I could see for miles, mostly straight down. On my side of the car was the face of the mountain, on the opposite side, nothing. As I crept down the road, I reached the first of many curves. Going around the curve requires going as close to the edge as you dare so that you can try to see around the curve before you actually commit to it. I decided to roll the window down hoping to increase my chances for success by adding to ability to listen for an approaching vehicle. As I completed the first curve, I could feel the end of the car slide a bit, like I was driving and had hit a patch of ice. This was a very unnerving feeling as I was sure that the airbags would not quite cut it if we went over the side. Fortunately, the car was kind enough to inform me that it had activated the stability system
