Joe DiMaggio

Joe DiMaggio was one of the Greatest hitters and center fielders in all of baseball history. DiMaggio, otherwise known as the "Yankee Clipper", was famous for his gracefulness both at the plate and out on the field. Joe used an unusually wide batting stance to achieve his record breaking 56 game hitting streak. He spent his years with the New York Yankees, leading them to nine World Series championships. At the Baseball's Centennial Celebration in 1969, DiMaggio was named the "Greatest Living Player". Although there were many who far surpassed his records, Joe DiMaggio set standards for many players to come, in both the style of their game and how they live their lives.
Joseph Paul DiMaggio was born in Martinez, California on November 25, 1914. His parents were immigrants from Sicily, Italy. His parents came to the United States and settled down in San Francisco, California where Joe's dad earned his living by being a fisherman. In growing up, DiMaggio's household was dominated by baseball. Both his two brothers, Tom and Vince, were constantly playing. There is a legend that claims Joe DiMaggio's father fought hard to keep his sons from playing baseball. He wanted his boys to get a good education first and to make something of themselves. Tom, Joe's older brother said, "He wanted us to make a good, honest living, so we could get away from the struggle and the poverty we had as kids." It was not enough to stop them though, because all three of the DiMaggio boys went on to play for the Major Leagues later in life. Frank Venezia, Joe's childhood friend, remembers DiMaggio fondly. "Joe had a keen mind. He would have been good at anything he did. He just wasn't interested in school. I think part of it was he was afraid to talk in class. That probably came from his home. His parents were hermits, they didn't come out of the house much. Joe&apo...
