The Giver vs. Our Society
The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast The Giver to our society. The first comparison between The Giver and our society in the constitution of Family is who makes up a family. In both societies families are made up of children and parents. This is a positive way to make up a family. In ?the community? and our own society children are given a positive comfort object. In ?the community? children are given a comfort object and in our society children are given stuffed animals or other small toys. In both The Giver and our society children have positive bedtime rituals. In Lois Lowry?s book Lily and Jonas? father helps Lily go to bed. In our society parents helps kids get ready for bed and then tuck them into bed. The first contrast between The Giver and our society is the number of family members. In ?the community? family units are negatively restricted to only two children, one female
In our society we can marry whomever we want and we don?t need permission from the government, this is positive. Finally both societies have recess. In The Giver this is negative because birthmothers have kids and are given to family units. In both societies offspring is created. I think I would prefer to live in our society because we are allowed to make choices. In our society parents have their own kids without the need of ?birthmothers, this is positive. In our society it is positive, we have no restriction on the number or gender of children. Their Science and Technology is like our Science and Math classes and their Civil Procedures and Government is like our Social Studies class. In our society students only have recess up until 5th grade. In both ?the community? and our society there are positive teacher to class ratios. In both societies children are required to go to school after age 12. In The Giver, after age 12 schooling becomes job specific. In both The Giver and our society can get married. In our society there is a mostly positive ratio of 20-25 students per teacher.
