             Psychoanalysis Vs. Humanistic: Which approach works?
             Throughout the history of psychology, there have been many different schools of psychological thought. Two examples are Psychoanalysis and Humanistic. Both schools try to achieve the goals of psychology, which are to describe, explain, predict and manage the components of behavior, but they set out to achieve this goal in different ways.
             Psychoanalysis was developed by Sigmund Freud in the early 1900's. Freud was interested in helping people overcome anxiety and focused on the causes and treatment of emotional disturbances. He created the psychoanalytic approach which aims at uncovering conflicts and unconscious impulses though special techniques like free association and dream analysis. In free association, the patient is asked to report whatever comes to mind, regardless of order, how trivial it might seem, or how disagreeable it might feel. The purpose of free association is to help patients learn to recognize connections and patterns among their thoughts and to allow the unconscious to express itself freely. In dream analysis, patients are asked to describe their dreams in detail; a patient's dreams are interpreted and used to gain insight into unconscious motivations. The goal of dream analysis is to disclose a patient's unconscious desires and motivations by discovering the meaning of their dreams.
             Humanistic psychology emphasizes the uniqueness of the human experience and the idea that human beings have free will to determine their destiny. Humanistic psychologists believe that humans are innately good, behavior is purposeful and goal-directed, healthy people are aware of all their behavior and they choose their behavior patterns, a client's behavior can only be understood from the client's point of view and effective therapy occurs only when a client modifies his or her behavior, not when the therapist manipulates it.
