How do these sequences reflect the ideology of the director? What links can you see between TRL and SPR?Explore the editing and film process employed hear- consider->Transitions- visual and form digetic to non-digetic sound >Compare with institutional convention>Consider characterisation, representationThe opening scene of 'Saving Private Ryan' begins with a mechanised tone of a high-pitched trumpet-like sound and traditional style drums interchanging. The American Flag is then shown at a close up. From the beginning the feeling of a sentimental and noble war film is portrayed, representing America as victorious, by showing their flag continually. The flag also tends to be rather glorifying towards the American people to begin the film is such a way. We are shown a group of middle-aged people walking respectively, a single older man then becomes detached from the group and is identified amongst the scene-he is sobbing. This is because his memories of war are coming back to him as he gazes at the flag. The man then walks to a cl
Both TRL and SPR incorporate the use of soliloquies of soldiers in the battle scenes. In SPR the scene is very long, this is deliberate to maintain a horrendous and unbearable scene. However Malick plays on our generic expectations, as the scene is built up into a climax, and as the soldiers get to the shore, there is nobody there. There is a transition from contemporary to retrospective. Spielberg bombards our sense so we get an immediate idea of what it is like to face carnage. A loyal and patriotic sound is heard, with a drone base synchronized in. The crosses are white and therefore have connotations of signifying peace, and contrast well the green grass. There is a sense of panic and a close up of the shaking of hands as they sense themselves drawing near to the shore. There is a big explosion on the sand as the dull colour of war contrasts with a bright orange surge of fire. So Spielberg has portrayed his film in a way, which is respectful and dignified towards America. Interestingly the sound of waves is heard before the transition takes place into the sea. In SPR one soldiers speaks of how it is the end, he looks at the camera as if another friend. This makes the scenes more unbearable, and the audience wants it to stop. As there is a strong transition between the underwater and above.
